Round 1 - 4th October 2008
McIntyre Cup v Gisborne @ Gardiner Reserve
The McIntyre Cup side travelled to Gisborne for the Round 1 clash against Gisborne. Steve Grey lost the toss, and Gisborne decided to bat. Gisborne started slowly, with the score on 2/57 after 20 overs. In the second half of the innings the Gisborne batsmen took away the ascendency, and made a respectable 6/169 from their 40 overs. Best of the bowlers were Luke Morrison (2/25), Steve Grey (2/31) and Jake Calleja (1/28) in his first McIntyre match. New boy to the club Clint Richards chipped in for a wicket also.
United got off to a solid start, with Adam Smith (33) and Andrew Powell (22) putting on 52 for the opening partnership. Tim Boxall impressed in his first game back for United with a solid 40, while Steve Grey chipped in with 21, but United could not keep up with the required run rate. We fell short by 18 runs, finishing on 6/151.
While the result was disappointing, there were plenty of positives to come out of the match. Next week, a tough match against reigning premier Bacchus Marsh in the first two day match of the season.
B Grade v Bacchus Marsh @ Langama Park 1
We hosted Bacchus Marsh, one of last years finalists, for our first game this season and things started well with us winning the toss and batting. Paul Sahlberg and Dylan Wright started off for us and what a great start. Our first wicket fell in the 21st over for 56, Paul for a well made 13. Damo joined Dylan and they continued the fine form until Dylan was out for a magnificent 81 in the 35th over. Josh Smith then joined Damo, but only for an over when Damo was out for a good 25 trying to push the score along. Josh was next out for 3 and Fogs for 4 shortly after in dying overs. Webbs and Waxo came together and put on 16 to get us to 5 for 144 cc. We thought this was a good score on the slow Langama 1 ground and proved to be so.
Bacchus were really never in the hunt losing wickets in quick succession right from the word go. Jesse James and Rob Hyatt started up for us, with Jesse having a chance go down early. He came back from that to take 2 wickets in the 6th over 2 balls apart to start us off. Rob bowled well without luck in his 6 over spell. Waxo and Webbs then got together again and continued the good bowling with Waxo picking up the next 2 wickets. This had Bacchus looking down the barrel at 4 for 53. Bacchus then consolidated to move their score to 103 before Nathan Rudd took a great catch off his own bowling to snare the 5th wicket. Dylan continued his great match with the ball picking up 2 wickets. Jesse was given the ball again to finish off his 8 overs and picked up Baker, Coach of Bacchus, to finish with 3 for 21. A great effort for his first game in the 2's. At the end of the 40 overs Bacchus finished with 8 for 129. A great effort by everyone. Dylan's 81 and 2 for 31 a great start to the season. Damo 25 runs and a catch, great effort. Paul sensational start, occupying the crease for 21 overs, just what we needed. With the ball, What can you say, Fall of wickets 23, 23, 38, 53, 103, 114, 123, 124 great bowling by all. Jesse finishing the pick of the bowlers with 8-3-3-21. Rob 6-2-0-17, solid. Waxo 7-3-2-10. Webbs 6-1-0-31. Dylan 8-1-2-31 and Natt 5-0-1-15 great bowling in the middle of the innings when Baker was taking it to us. All in al a great result and onward and upward from here
C Grade v Rupertswood @ Rupertswood 2
For the first game of 2008/09 we traveled to Salesian College to take on Rupertswood in a one dayer,
The day started off well with us winning the toss and deciding to put Rupo into bat.
JASON COLLINS and STEVE SOLA opened the bowling and both bowled very well beating the bat on numerous occasions, and also tying Rupo’s openers down with some tight bowling and some good fielding. At the halfway point of their 40 overs Rupo were a steady 1/67, but we thought considering it was a smallish ground we were pretty even. While the runs kept coming at around 4 an over , we kept taking wickets, until Rupo finally finished their 40 overs at 7/164.
The 5 bowlers used all bowled well, with PAUL MCKAY taking the impressive figures of 4/36(8), JASON COLLINS 0/31(8),STEVE SOLA 1/18(8), REECE TURVEY 0/30(8), JESSY CARROLL 1/40(8), special mention to DREW EVANS behind the stumps who took 2 smart catches and got a great leg side stumping.
DRUMMY and MATT EDDY strode to the crease with the confidence that on a smallish ground and a young bowling attack 164 was very gettable. DRUMMY was the first to go for 5, score 1/8(6), MATT and JAS RICHO took the score to 25, before MATT copped a beauty which took the off stump for 9 score 2/25(12). DAMIAN GAUCI joined RICHO and they took the score along at a steady pace to 54, then RICHO departed for a well made 17. In the18th over, DREW EVANS was the next to go for 1, score now 4/56(20).
The skipper joined his younger brother at the crease, and after a few early rash shots the GAUCI boys took the score to 108 before DAMIAN fell for a well compiled 43, we still required 56 off the last 10 overs. JAS COLLINS came and went for 1, but was in a valuable 16 run partnership, we were now 6/122 of 33 overs, young JESSY CARROLL came in and batted sensationally, he really valued his wicket, and pushed the scoring rate along. For us to pass Rupo’s score with 4 balls to spare, we finished on 6/170 with JESSY CARROLL 13 no,and JASON GAUCI 64 no. Overall it was a
great team effort with all 3 facets (batting, bowling and fielding) done excellently.
